A Guide to Selecting the Right Virtual Private Server Provider

Virtual Private Server Provider

Virtual private servers (VPSs) have firmly cemented themselves as the go-to infrastructure solution for growing businesses. However, while any VPS offers some benefits, not all solutions are created equal.

There are five main factors you should take into account when choosing a cloud solution provider (CSP) if you hope to get the best possible service for your money.

Data centre facilities

As you’ll be entrusting your new provider with your business’s valuable data, you’ll want to be sure that a) their data centres are located in a reliable destination and b) that they meet globally accepted data centre standards.

It might appear a trivial issue on the surface, but it’s an absolute must that you choose a cloud provider based in Australia. Australia’s Privacy Principles (APPs) place several requirements on how you store personal data, and by selecting an overseas CSP, you have no guarantee that you’ll be meeting these requirements. On top of compliance benefits, you’ll also be able to enjoy superior localised support, as well as reduced latency, by choosing a provider close to home.

The second point to consider is the quality of the data centre facilities themselves. These standards range from Tier I, offering the absolute essentials, up to Tier IV, which is fully equipped to operate in extreme circumstances. It’s advisable to select a cloud provider with at least Tier III data centres; they have an expected uptime of 99.982%, have multiple paths for power and cooling, as well as the ability to be updated and maintained without going offline.

It’s worth noting that by choosing a custom cloud solution provider, such as KeepItSafe, your data can be replicated over two geographically separate locations. Should disasters like flooding or bushfires strike a data centre, you can rest assured that your data is safe and you’ll receive continuous uptime.

Capabilities

With scalability being a key reason to opt for a VPS solution, you’ll need to consider the full extent of your cloud solution provider’s capabilities and whether they’ll be able to keep pace with your business’s growing needs. Just because a provider can meet your requirements today, doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be ready to in the future. As such, you’ll want to look at how easy it is to add extra vCPU cores, RAM and storage as and when you need.

Further, from that, you will want to consider the connection speeds they offer and whether they have any data transfer limitations. No company wants their performance throttled, so it’s best to opt for a provider that offers dedicated connection speeds of up to 10Gbps and completely unlimited data transfers.

Extra capacity isn’t all a growing company needs; new services may demand alternative functions from your VPS provider, whether that’s super-fast SSD storage, incremental or continuous backup, or high availability replication.

Pricing

While it might seem like price comparison sites will tell you everything you need to know about the cost of VPS options on the market, there are several factors they can fail to take into account. If you’re looking to get the most for your money, it’s worth investigating how customisable their offering is and how transparent they are about costs.

Some CSPs offer strictly tiered choices that can either fail to meet your requirements or leave you paying for capacity and performance you simply don’t need. An ideal supplier will offer a fully customisable package that will ensure you’re only paying for what you’re using.

On the other hand, some may offer monthly prices that seem reasonable, only to hit you with setup fees, unexpected overage charges or upscaling costs. KeepItSafe guarantees a simple, flat monthly payment with no additional fees.

Getting the right fit

Whilst it can be tempting to base your choice of VPS on price and your current requirements, there are a number of factors that could impact the service you receive now and into the future. By using these metrics to measure a selection of vendors you should end up with a supplier who can properly support your business as it grows.
